World Water Week in Stockholm 2019

The 2019 edition of World Water Week takes place on 25-30 August in Stockholm, Sweden. During the week, UN-Water will convene various activities, sessions and events.

  • Leaving No One Behind, the UN World Water Development Report

    • Short description: Extreme events, environmental degradation, population growth, rapid urbanization, unsustainable and inequitable consumption patterns, conflicts and social unrest, and unprecedented migratory flows are among the interconnected pressures faced by humanity, often hitting those in vulnerable situations the hardest through their impacts on water.
      The 2019 edition of the World Water Development Report titled ‘Leaving No One Behind’ seeks to inform policy and decision-makers, inside and outside the water community, how improvements in water resources management and access to water supply and sanitation services are essential to overcoming poverty and addressing various other social, geographical and economic inequities. Addressing the inequalities faced by disadvantaged groups requires tailored solutions that take account of the day-to-day realities of people and communities in vulnerable situations. Evidence-based knowledge on challenges in ensuring equitable access to water supply and sanitation to design and adequately implement policies as well as appropriate institutional frameworks and efficient and proper use of financial resources, are vital to eliminating inequalities in human rights to accessing safe drinking water and sanitation.

  • Looking forward to Phase 2 of SDG 6 monitoring

    • Short description: In embarking upon the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with a dedicated goal on water and sanitation, credible data are needed to underpin sector advocacy, stimulate political commitment, inform decision making and trigger well-placed investment towards health, environment and economic gains. To be able to follow-up on and review progress towards SDG 6 we need evidence on the situation for water and sanitation in the world today. To support countries in monitoring water- and sanitation-related issues, and to report on global progress towards SDG 6, in 2014 UN-Water launched the Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6, which includes the eight UN agencies who are the custodians of the 11 SDG 6 indicators. January 2019 marked the start of Phase 2, which will see a focus on building the capacity and ownership of UN Member States on water and sanitation monitoring. This session will see a discussion of priorities and opportunities for Phase 2, and will include a demonstration and launch of the UN-Water SDG 6 Data Portal.

  • UN-Water Stakeholder Dialogue: 2019 GLAAS report

    • Short description: With the release of the 2019 UN-Water Global Analysis and Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-water (GLAAS), this event provides an opportunity to discuss the main findings of the report that focuses on governance and in particular on national plans, policies and targets. Participants will engage in a dialogue on how we can strengthen national systems for water, sanitation and hygiene under the Sustainable Development Goals.
      The UN-Water GLAAS report provides policy- and decision-makers at all levels with a reliable, easily accessible, comprehensive and global analysis.

  • World Water Day 2020: Water and Climate Change

    • Short description: Water is an important piece in the mitigation puzzle but the single most important key to adaptation. Changes in water availability will impact food security and have already proven to trigger refugee dynamics and political instability. With a changing climate, characteristics of hydrological extreme events will change. More floods and more severe droughts will await us in future.
      In 2019, the UN Secretary General will host a Climate Summit to boost ambition and accelerate actions to implement the Paris Agreement. In 2020, each country that has signed the Agreement will have outlined and communicated their post-2020 climate actions and this is also the year when World Water Day and the World Water Development Report will be dedicated to water and climate change.
      In this event participants will get an opportunity to learn more about water and climate change and identify ways to be actively involved in the World Water Day campaign.
      The 2020 World Water Day campaign is coordinated by the UN-Water Expert Group on Water and Climate.

Breakfast sessions for youth engagement

Morning briefings will be hosted in the UN-Water pavilion on different thematic areas every day. The sessions will enable youth to better understand the sector and engage in a conversation and meeting with the experts.

  • Wednesday August 28th: UN Environment, the Food Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
  • Thursday August 29th: World Meteorological Organization (WMO), United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

 Launch of the SDG 6 Data Portal

The SDG 6 Data Portal is the flagship product of UN-Water’s Integrated Monitoring Initiative for SDG 6. The portal brings together data on all the SDG 6 global indicators and other key social, economic and environmental parameters, and tracks overall progress towards SDG 6 at global, regional and national levels.

Facebook live interviews

During the 2019 World Water Week Facebook live interviews will be conducted in the UN-Water Pavilion with experts and representatives from the international community.
